How to Fix Squeaky Bed Frames and Sofa Joints

A squeak is rarely dramatic โ€” just a small, insistent noise that makes itself known at the worst moments. A bed frame that creaks every time you turn over. A sofa that protests whenever someone shifts their weight. Neither is a sign that your furniture is failing. In most cases, it means one or two joints have loosened slightly, or two surfaces are rubbing where they should not be.

The fix is usually straightforward, and you can resolve most squeaks in under 30 minutes with tools most households already have.

This guide walks through the most common causes of squeaks in bed frames and sofas, how to locate them precisely, and how to fix them properly rather than just masking the noise.

Why Furniture Joints Squeak in the First Place

Understanding the cause makes the fix more reliable. Squeaks happen when two surfaces move against each other under load โ€” either because a joint has loosened and is shifting, or because two materials are rubbing with friction.

In Singaporeโ€™s climate, timber furniture is also affected by humidity. Wood expands during wetter months and contracts during drier, air-conditioned periods. Over time, this cycling can work bolts slightly loose or cause joints that were once tight-fitting to develop small gaps.

For metal bed frames, the mechanism is different. Metal-on-metal contact at joints and slat holders creates a higher-pitched squeak, and the fix tends to be simpler โ€” usually a matter of lubrication or tightening. For timber frames with mortise-and-tenon or dowel joints, the fix involves re-stabilising the joint itself.

Sofas squeak for similar reasons, though the construction is more layered. The noise might come from the timber frame inside the upholstery, from the legs, from metal joiners in modular configurations, or occasionally from the webbing and spring system rubbing against the frame.

How to Locate the Squeak Accurately

Fixing a squeak without locating it precisely is guesswork. A noise that sounds like it is coming from the centre of a bed frame is often originating at one of the side rails. Sound travels through timber and metal easily, so the apparent source and the actual source can be quite different.

For a Bed Frame

Strip the mattress and base, if applicable, off entirely. Have someone sit on the frame and shift their weight across different sections systematically while you watch and listen from a low angle.

Look for any visible movement at joints. A well-fitting joint should show almost none. Work through:

  • The headboard connection
  • The side rails
  • The centre support beam, if there is one
  • The slat holders

Once you have identified the section, locate the specific joint by applying hand pressure directly.

For a Sofa

Remove any loose cushions and have someone apply firm pressure to different sections of the seating and backrest while you listen closely.

Sofa squeaks are often at the leg connections, at the joint between the seat frame and the backrest frame, or at the point where the arm connects to the body. Lightly running your hand along the frame while someone applies pressure can help you feel vibration at the source.

Fixing a Squeaky Timber Bed Frame

Once you have located the joint, work through these steps in order.

Tighten All Hardware First

Most timber bed frames use bolt-and-barrel-nut systems at the rail connections. Over time, these back off slightly.

Use the correct Allen key or spanner to snug them down. Do not over-torque โ€” you are looking for firm resistance, not maximum force. Re-test after tightening before doing anything else; this alone resolves a significant proportion of squeaks.

Address Gaps in Wooden Joints

If tightening the hardware does not resolve it โ€” or if the joint is a dowel or mortise connection without hardware โ€” the fix involves filling or re-securing the joint.

For a gap between a tenon and its mortise housing, wood glue applied with a thin spatula or toothpick into the gap, then clamped or held under load overnight, is the correct approach. White PVA wood glue works well here. Wipe away any excess immediately.

Lubricate Contact Surfaces

Where two timber surfaces rub against each other at a joint โ€” particularly at slat holders or where the rail sits against the frame โ€” a thin application of beeswax, paraffin wax, or a specialist wood-on-wood lubricant eliminates the friction that causes squeaking.

A plain white candle can work as paraffin wax. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants on timber; they can bleed into finishes and attract dust.

Fixing a Squeaky Metal Bed Frame

Metal frames are more forgiving. The most common cause is bare metal-on-metal contact at joints, slat holders, or where the legs meet the floor.

At joint connections, a small amount of WD-40 or silicone-based lubricant applied to the contact surfaces and then wiped back to a thin film will resolve most metal-on-metal squeaks.

At slat holders, thin rubber matting cut to size โ€” or even strips of felt adhesive pad โ€” placed between the slat and the holder eliminates both squeaking and slat movement.

Check the leg caps as well. Metal legs with rubber or plastic caps can loosen over time, causing the leg to contact the floor unevenly. Replacing worn leg caps is a simple fix and makes a meaningful difference to stability.

If your metal frame uses centre-leg support, check that the centre leg is making full contact with the floor and has not been bent slightly out of alignment. A small adjustment by hand is usually sufficient.

Fixing a Squeaky Sofa

The approach depends on where the squeak is coming from.

Leg Connections

Sofa legs are typically attached with a single threaded bolt into the frame. Hand-tighten by turning the leg clockwise until firm.

If the thread has stripped, a furniture repair bracket or thread repair insert from a hardware store restores the connection properly.

Frame Joints Inside the Upholstery

This is the most involved fix, but still manageable. If you can access the sofa frame from underneath โ€” most sofas have a dust cover on the base that can be carefully folded back and reattached โ€” look for any joints that show movement.

Wood glue on a loose tenon, or tightening a loose corner bracket, will resolve most internal frame squeaks. Take care not to damage the fabric when folding back the dust cover; use a seam ripper or blunt tool rather than anything sharp.

Modular Joiner Hardware

Modular sofas connect sections with metal hook-and-rail systems or bolted joiners. These can work loose with use. Locate the joining hardware between sections, tighten or re-engage it, and re-test.

When a Squeak Signals Something More Serious

Most squeaks are friction or loose hardware. But occasionally, a squeak is the first sign of a structural issue โ€” a cracked timber member, a bent metal rail, or a joint that has failed rather than simply loosened.

Signs to look for include:

  • The squeak is accompanied by visible flexing of the frame
  • The joint shows a crack or split in the timber
  • The frame feels unstable even after tightening all hardware

In these cases, furniture repair adhesive and tightening will not be sufficient. A cracked structural member in a bed frame โ€” particularly a side rail โ€” needs to be replaced, not patched.

If you are unsure whether what you are seeing is cosmetic or structural, bring photographs to our team and we will give you an honest read.

Explore our bed frame collection if you are at the point where a replacement makes more sense than an ongoing repair. We carry a range of frames in timber and upholstered finishes across HDB and condo-appropriate dimensions, and our showroom team can help you find the right size for your space.

A Final Note on Prevention

A squeak-free frame stays that way longer with a few simple habits. Check and lightly snug all hardware bolts every six to twelve months. It takes five minutes and prevents most loose-joint squeaks before they start.

Keep furniture away from air-conditioning vents where possible; the rapid humidity cycling accelerates timber movement. Use furniture pads under all legs to prevent floor contact squeaks and protect your floors.

If you would like to talk through a specific squeak or get a second opinion on whether a frame is worth repairing, our team at the showroom on 5 Ubi Link is available daily from 11:30 AM to 9 PM โ€” including weekends and public holidays. No appointment needed. Bring photos if you have them; it helps us give you a more useful answer.
